This is an area where you can build a lucrative career, building critical skills in demand by today’s financial organizations. An ambitious developer who wants to become an expert honing a variety of skills is perfect for such an opportunity.

Why COBOL and Java?

As an older development language, COBOL isn’t typically a language covered at the university level. However, the technology is absolutely fundamental to the running of critical financial and business services; some argue it’s the backbone of the US financial sector. Despite being a “legacy” language, COBOL’s speed and accuracy make it the go-to language for massive transactional processes (hence its popularity in financial services).

Banking applications involving Mainframe are not built purely in COBOL, however. There are layers of infrastructure on top of the Mainframe backbone, such as UNIX shell scripting, Java API development and Mobile development, which exist all within the same software development team.

While banks take on the decades-long process of transitioning from Mainframe to Distributed development, there is a critical need in the market for individuals who can bridge that gap, understanding the technologies both old and new. Most new generation Mainframe developers become hybrid developers for APIs, Mainframe, and beyond.
